Zanzibar Revenue Authority Surpasses Revenue Collection Targets
Unguja. The Zanzibar Revenue Authority (ZRA) has achieved remarkable success in revenue collection, surpassing its targets for the first half of the 2024/25 fiscal year. From July to December 2024, ZRA collected Sh429.033 billion, exceeding the projected figure of Sh419.203 billion and reaching an impressive 102 percent of the estimate.
In a statement on January 4, 2024, ZRA’s Acting Commissioner noted that this strong financial performance is attributed to strategic investments in infrastructure and social services, along with overall enhancements in Zanzibar’s economic activities.
During the second quarter of the fiscal year, ZRA collected Sh228.098 billion against an expected target of Sh225.171 billion, equating to 101.3 percent of the projected revenue. This performance marks a significant 20.09 percent increase compared to the same period last year, which saw collections of Sh189.937 billion.
In December alone, ZRA collected Sh75.582 billion, slightly exceeding the projected Sh75.501 billion, thereby achieving a success rate of 100.11 percent. This reflects a Sh12.069 billion increase from the Sh63.513 billion collected in December 2023, showcasing a growth of 19 percent.
Commissioner Mohamed emphasized the importance of improved cooperation between ZRA and businesses, alongside collaboration from various stakeholders in enhancing voluntary tax payments. The development of port infrastructure, particularly at Mkoani Port in Pemba, as well as the increased efficiency of revenue collection systems, have also contributed to this growth.
Looking forward, ZRA is committed to further enhancing revenue collection efforts by collaborating with businesses to establish a more supportive legal environment, offering additional support, and creating favorable conditions for new taxpayers.
ZRA plans to implement dedicated taxpayer service camps in various regions to provide closer tax services and promote business registration. Business owners have positively responded to ZRA’s proactive approach, which includes direct visits to understand their challenges and encourage voluntary compliance.
One businessman expressed satisfaction, stating, “We feel a closer connection between the authorities and businesses. The atmosphere has changed for the better, and we are now working together towards common goals.”
