A coalition of northern youth groups, students, and community-based organizations has issued a warning against the politicization of the tax reform bills currently pending in the National Assembly.
The assembly, which was attended by representatives from the seven states of North-West Nigeria, convened at Arewa House, Kaduna, on Thursday. The coalition expressed its support for the tax reform bills but emphasized that the discussion surrounding them should remain apolitical.
In a recent endorsement, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum supported the tax reform bills introduced by the President.
At the symposium, a statement was delivered by the National Coordinator of the Nigeria First Project Initiative, who, along with other officials, articulated the urgent need to maintain focus on the crucial financial adjustments rather than allow political distractions to influence the debate.
“The tax reform bills have the potential to strengthen the nation’s revenue sources, reduce reliance on oil revenue, and create a fairer tax system. However, we are troubled by the politicization that has infiltrated the discussions,” the National Coordinator stated.
The coalition highlighted that such maneuverings serve only to divert attention from fundamental issues affecting the populace. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and dismiss divisive rhetoric from those seeking to gain politically from this critical issue,” they asserted.
Concerns were raised regarding political figures manipulating public opinion, veiling their personal agendas as regional or national matters, thus framing the debate around forthcoming elections rather than necessary reforms.
The coalition called on Northerners to actively engage in the upcoming public hearings regarding tax bills and to share their perspectives constructively. They stressed the importance of ensuring that their voices are acknowledged in the decision-making process.
Furthermore, the group urged Northern states to diversify their revenue streams, enhance agricultural development, and leverage federal policies on solid minerals and livestock initiatives. They believe that with strategic leadership and dedication to transparency, Northern states can achieve economic self-sufficiency.
The coalition also praised the initiatives set forth by the President, highlighting the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development and the Northwest Development Commission as critical steps towards addressing the economic challenges in Northern Nigeria.
“The President’s efforts to tackle the issues facing our region are commendable. However, the successful implementation of these initiatives is vital to ensure that their impacts reach the communities,” the statement concluded.
The engagement attracted participants from a broad spectrum of youth groups and community organizations, all united in their commitment to build a prosperous future for Northern Nigeria.
