The virtual reality market has witnessed a surge in headsets over the past few years, with major players like Meta and Apple entering the arena. Now, Sony has introduced a significant addition: the Sony XYN headset and an innovative line dedicated to spatial 3D content, unveiled at CES 2025.
What differentiates the Sony XYN headset from its competitors is its specific targeting of the 3D content creation community. Unlike many VR headsets designed for consumer entertainment, the XYN line is engineered for creators producing intricate spatial content.
The Sony XYN Headset
Sony has made its mark in the VR segment with the PlayStation VR series, yet the introduction of the XYN headset showcases a new direction focused on professionals. This headset is equipped with 4K OLED microdisplays and advanced video see-through technology, allowing users to immerse themselves in 3D environments and interact seamlessly with 3D models, optimizing the development process.
The XYN headset is designed for comfort, making it ideal for extended use by creators. However, being in the prototype stage means that certain elements, such as the controllers, are expected to undergo redesigns before the final product release.
XYN Spatial Capture
At CES, while the Sony XYN headset generated excitement, it was the XYN Spatial capture solution that stole the spotlight. This groundbreaking tool enables users to create 3D renditions of real-world objects effortlessly. By capturing a series of photos with a mirrorless camera, users can convert these images into photorealistic 3D CG assets.
The integration of the XYN headset with the Spatial capture tool creates a streamlined workflow where creators can capture, model, and interact with their designs in VR. Additionally, a mobile app is being developed for smartphone users, further enhancing accessibility in 3D content creation.
XYN Motion Studio
Among the trio of products launched in the XYN line, the XYN Motion Studio stands out as a game-changer. Building on the existing mocopi technology, which uses wearable sensors for tracking, the XYN Motion Studio offers advanced motion capture studio software with 12 integrated sensors.
This studio lets creators refine captured movements and apply them to 3D models, granting precise control over animation. One of its most remarkable features is the capability to fill in motion gaps intelligently, ensuring smooth and continuous animations without relying solely on flawless tracking.
