BEIRUT, Lebanon – This morning, October 13, 2024, peacekeepers stationed at a United Nations position in Ramyah reported a significant incident involving the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), as three platoons crossed the Blue Line into Lebanese territory.
At approximately 4:30 a.m., while peacekeepers were in shelters, two IDF Merkava tanks breached the main gate of the UN position and entered the area. They demanded that the base extinguish its lights. After about 45 minutes, the tanks withdrew following protests from UNIFIL, which highlighted that the IDF presence posed a threat to peacekeeping personnel.
Subsequently, around 6:40 a.m., peacekeepers at the same location noted gunfire occurring 100 meters to the north, accompanied by smoke. Despite donning protective masks, fifteen peacekeepers experienced adverse effects, including skin irritation and gastrointestinal issues, after the smoke permeated their camp. All affected personnel are currently receiving medical treatment.
Additionally, on the previous day, IDF soldiers obstructed a vital UNIFIL logistical operation near Meiss ej Jebel, preventing its completion.
UNIFIL has reiterated multiple times over the past few days the necessity for the IDF and all involved parties to uphold their responsibilities concerning the safety and security of UN personnel and property, and to respect the integrity of UN premises at all times.
The incursion into a UN position represents a serious infringement of international law and a violation of Security Council resolution 1701 (2006). Any intentional assault on peacekeepers is deemed a grave breach of international humanitarian law and violates resolution 1701. UNIFIL’s mandate guarantees its freedom of movement within its operational area, and restrictions on this freedom are also violations of resolution 1701.
“We have formally requested an explanation from the IDF regarding these alarming violations,” stated a UNIFIL spokesperson.
