Two Russian oil tankers have sunk in the Black Sea due to severe weather conditions, resulting in oil leaks into the water, according to reports from Russian authorities. The incident involved the tankers, which were carrying 29 crew members.
Video footage appears to depict one of the vessels breaking apart and submerging amidst the storm, with visible oil streaks on the water’s surface. Tragically, at least one crew member has reportedly died, prompting an investigation into potential criminal negligence.
The sinking occurred in the Kerch Strait, a significant waterway between Russia and occupied Crimea. In response, a comprehensive rescue and cleanup operation is currently underway, mobilizing tugboats, helicopters, and over 50 personnel.
Russia’s federal sea and inland water transport agency confirmed that the two tankers, identified as Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, sank due to the storm. Each vessel had crews of 15 and 14 members respectively, and the incident has led to an oil spill, with each tanker capable of carrying approximately 4,200 tonnes of oil. The full impact of the oil spill is still being assessed.
