On February 20th, 2025, the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) announced the renewal of its contract with TÜV Rheinland for an additional three years. This contract empowers TÜV Rheinland to issue Certificates of Conformity (CoC) under the Tanzanian Pre-shipment Verification of Conformity (PVoC) Program.
The new agreement expands TÜV Rheinland’s service coverage to include regions such as the United Kingdom (Wales, Scotland, Ireland, England) and the Indian Subcontinent, encompassing India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Myanmar. Additionally, two regions previously serviced—United Arab Emirates and the Far East (including Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Cambodia)—have been reaffirmed in this renewal.
In a statement regarding the significance of this re-appointment, a senior executive from TÜV Rheinland emphasized Tanzania’s role as a vital trade hub in the East African region. He noted the company’s commitment to safeguarding Tanzanian consumers by ensuring that imported goods meet national and international standards.
The TBS is enhancing its PVoC framework by collaborating with experienced assessment bodies, reaffirming TÜV Rheinland’s role in issuing mandatory Certificates of Conformity for regulated goods. This collaboration is aimed at bolstering consumer safety, market confidence, and facilitating smooth global trade.
Furthermore, an executive highlighted the strategic benefits of TÜV Rheinland’s extensive global network and specially designed IT platform, which together enhance collaboration with TBS and instill confidence among exporters and importers alike.
The PVoC program has been in effect since 2012, tasked with protecting consumers from substandard products and ensuring high-quality imports in the Tanzanian market. The program oversees a wide array of regulated products including automotive parts, chemical and electrical goods, food items, furniture, and safety products. The lists of prohibited and exempted items remain unchanged.
