Joining Trump will be Vice President-elect JD Vance, controversial Pentagon nominee Pete Hegseth, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and other prominent figures for the 125th clash between the military academies.
Also part of the guest list is Daniel Penny, a military veteran recently acquitted of criminally negligent homicide related to the chokehold death of a subway rider in New York. Vance invited Penny, who has faced allegations from prosecutors amidst claims of attempting to ruin his life.
Trump has been increasing his public appearances ahead of his inauguration set for January 20, 2025. This week, he appeared with family at the New York Stock Exchange where he was named Time magazine’s person of the year.
Post-election, Trump has been strategizing at his Mar-a-Lago resort to assemble a team for his upcoming administration. Confidence is growing among his aides regarding Hegseth’s potential confirmation as defense secretary, despite prior controversies surrounding his candidacy.
DeSantis, a former Navy lawyer, remains a fallback option for Trump should Hegseth’s nomination falter.
Senior advisor Jason Miller expressed optimism for Hegseth’s confirmation, emphasizing the importance of experienced leadership within the Department of Defense.
House Speaker Mike Johnson is also expected to attend, accompanied by a cohort of GOP lawmakers eager to engage with the incoming president. Johnson plans to discuss legislative strategies amidst anticipated Democratic resistance.
Vance confirmed that Penny would join Trump’s suite at the Army side. Penny was recently acquitted of charges linked to a controversial incident that sparked debates over racial justice and systemic issues in New York City.
In supportive remarks, Vance described Penny as a courageous individual who endured undue legal pressures, expressing gratitude for his acceptance of the invitation.
Hegseth plans to mingle with Medal of Honor recipients during the event, while Trump’s picks for Navy secretary, John Phelan, and Army secretary, Dan Driscoll, are also anticipated to be present.
Kickoff for the game is scheduled for after 3 p.m. EST at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Army ranks 19th in the latest Top 25 poll following their recent victory over Tulane, marking a historic moment as they claim their first league title. Navy, with an 8-3 record, also had a noteworthy start to the season.
