US President-elect Donald Trump has issued a warning of “very-high” tariffs on Denmark in response to potential resistance regarding his ambitions for Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish jurisdiction.
When questioned on whether he would exclude the possibility of using military or economic actions to assert control over the strategically vital island, he remarked, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two.”
Trump emphasized the importance of Greenland, stating, “We need them for economic security.” His comments coincide with the visit of his son, who was in Greenland on the same day.
Prior to arriving in the capital, Nuuk, Trump Jr. described his trip as a “personal day-trip” aimed at engaging with locals, without any scheduled meetings with government representatives.
In response to inquiries about Trump Jr.’s visit, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated on Danish television that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” affirming that only the local population can determine their own future. She reiterated that “Greenland is not for sale,” while also highlighting the necessity for strong cooperation between Denmark and its close NATO ally, the United States.
