Charleroi, located an hour southeast of Pittsburgh, has seen a notable demographic shift as hundreds of migrants have settled in the town, primarily lured by employment opportunities at a local food packaging facility. The population, which dipped dramatically over the decades to just over 4,000 in the last census, is now estimated to include about 2,000 immigrants, a sharp increase from fewer than 200 just a few years ago. Trump’s recent comments about Charleroi suggested that Haitian immigrants have diminished the town’s aesthetic appeal and burdened community resources, with implications of increased safety concerns.
Local leaders have quickly condemned Trump’s remarks. Joe Manning, the borough manager, emphasized that the community is not facing resource shortages and that crime rates have not surged, countering Trump’s assertions.
