Trump Ousts CFPB Director Rohit Chopra in Administration Shakeup
PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Donald Trump has dismissed Rohit Chopra, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), marking a significant move in the ongoing overhaul of Biden administration appointees.
Chopra, a key regulator from the former Democratic administration, was one of the last remaining officials from that era since Trump took office on January 20. Notably, he had previously been named as a Democratic member of the Federal Trade Commission during Trump’s first term.
The notification of Chopra’s termination came via an email from the White House, as confirmed by a source familiar with the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Chopra has been recognized as an ally of Senator Elizabeth Warren, a prominent figure often targeted by Trump. Warren expressed that under Chopra’s leadership, the CFPB effectively held Wall Street accountable and protected consumers from being excluded from the financial system, including those affected by overdraft fees and other financial barriers.
While Chopra was entitled to a five-year term by law, he had indicated he would resign if requested by the new administration.
