WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has officially suspended numerous federal research grants at Princeton University, as announced by the institution on Tuesday.
Princeton officials reported receiving notifications that several federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, NASA, and the Defense Department, have halted funding. This decision was conveyed in a communication from Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber.
While the specific reasons for the suspension remain unclear, Eisgruber emphasized the university’s commitment to complying with federal regulations.
“Our dedication to combating antisemitism and all forms of discrimination is unwavering, and we will collaborate with the government in these efforts,” he stated. “Princeton is equally committed to defending academic freedom and the due process rights of our university.”
Princeton joins a growing list of Ivy League institutions facing federal funding challenges amid ongoing investigations into antisemitism on campuses. Recently, Columbia University complied with federal demands after the government threatened to withdraw $400 million in funding and potentially billions more.
In a related development, a federal task force addressing antisemitism disclosed that Harvard University is undergoing a “comprehensive review” of nearly $9 billion in federal grants and contracts. Princeton is one of over 100 universities currently under investigation for incidents related to antisemitism or Islamophobia following a surge in pro-Palestinian protests.
The federal government plays a significant role in funding American universities, primarily through grants dedicated to scientific research.
