As the Dasara festival comes to a close, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) in Andhra Pradesh has taken decisive action against private bus operators exploiting passengers during this busy travel period. In the NTR district alone, authorities have filed cases against 151 bus operators and seized 16 buses in a special initiative conducted from October 3 to 12.
Deputy Transport Commissioner A. Mohan emphasized that this crackdown is a response to the recurring issue of private operators inflating ticket prices due to heightened demand during festivities. With reports of excessive overcharging surfacing, the RTA formed six teams of Motor Vehicle Inspectors to conduct surprise inspections throughout the district.
Inspections unveiled various violations, including vehicles operating without proper documentation and tax payments. Additionally, some operators were caught selling tickets at unreasonably high rates. The RTA collected a substantial fine of ₹28,24,654 from those found in violation of regulations.
Mohan condemned the practices of these private operators, stressing that it is unacceptable to exploit passengers’ travel needs. He warned that surprise checks will persist beyond the festival period to ensure compliance among private bus operators and maintain order in the transport sector.
