The Mining Marshals have successfully shut down an illegal mining operation in the Rafin-Gabas community of Kokona Local Government Area, Nasarawa State.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development announced this development through a statement on Thursday, revealing that the Marshals dismantled the site and apprehended three foreign nationals involved in the illicit activities.
This operation marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and to restore integrity within the sector. According to the Minister, the site had evaded law enforcement for an extended period, allegedly being protected by compromised security personnel.
Following a meticulous and coordinated strategy, the Mining Marshals were able to penetrate the site, although several suspects escaped, reportedly with the aid of some security operatives.
The Minister praised the Marshals for their pivotal role in this operation and emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to tackling illegal mining and ensuring those accountable face justice.
In addition, the Commander of the Mining Marshals indicated that a manhunt is underway for the fugitives, while investigations continue to unveil the security personnel involved in facilitating these illegal activities.
He also noted that the company operating illegally and some of its associates are facing pending criminal charges in the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Since the establishment of the Mining Marshals in 2024, the Federal Government has arrested 327 suspects and prosecuted 143 individuals for illegal mining-related crimes. The Marshals, who are trained operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, are equipped with tactical skills to effectively counter illegal mining and other criminal activities.
