Mortal Kombat Onslaught, the team-based RPG from NetherRealm Studios, is set to cease operations this October, following an announcement from the game’s developer. The shutdown will take place on October 21, 2024, nearly a year after its launch on October 17, 2023.
Although the game will not be playable starting in October, it has already been removed from app stores as of July 22, 2024. In-game purchases will be disabled on August 23.
In a message to fans, the developer expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “It has been an honor creating this game for our Kommunity.” The announcement did not specify the reasons behind the game’s closure, but the gaming industry has seen similar trends where titles fail to sustain their player bases.
The broader gaming landscape continues to evolve, with calls from industry leaders like the CEO of Digital Extremes advocating for patience in maintaining live-service games rather than hastily discontinuing them.
Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 1, the latest installment in the main series, launched in September 2023. No further game announcements have been made since, though fans eagerly anticipate the release of the next film, Mortal Kombat 2, scheduled for October 2025.
