Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently engaged in a crucial meeting with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to enhance bilateral relations and address pressing regional issues.
Taking place on a luxury yacht near the Thai-Malaysian maritime border, the discussions included vital topics like the Myanmar conflict and efforts to bring peace to Thailand’s southern regions. This meeting followed Thaksin’s appointment as Anwar’s adviser on Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) affairs.
Thaksin reported that he embarked on a yacht journey from Phuket to Koh Lipe with former Agriculture Minister Thamanat Prompow. Their discussions spanned significant issues affecting Thailand and its neighboring countries, emphasizing the necessity for Asean unity. “The more than 700 million people in the region must stick together to become a force to be reckoned with,” Thaksin stated.
In a message, Anwar described his meeting with Thaksin as engaging and productive. He highlighted topics including economic revitalization, the use of advanced technologies, and the importance of addressing the ongoing Myanmar crisis. He also underscored Thaksin’s extensive regional network as invaluable for Malaysia and Asean in tackling these challenges.
Anwar has proposed forming an informal advisory team to support Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship next year, with Thaksin as a key contributor. This initiative was revealed during a press conference on December 16, where Anwar met Thaksin’s daughter, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Experts view Thaksin’s appointment as a strategic move by Anwar to leverage the experience of seasoned regional leaders. The collaboration aims to bolster Asean unity and elevate Malaysia’s leadership within the region, given the ongoing crises and challenges. Malaysia could significantly benefit from Thailand’s influence in resolving the Myanmar crisis, enhancing its role as Asean chair, according to analysts.
Thaksin previously met with Anwar during a visit to Phuket in May 2024, indicating a growing partnership aimed at mutual progress for both nations and the region.
