In a significant move to support education, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that approximately 3.28 lakh college-going boys in Tamil Nadu will benefit from the state government’s Tamil Pudhalvan scheme, which allocates ₹360 crore for the year. This announcement was made during the scheme’s formal launch at the historic Coimbatore Arts College, attended by 6,500 students.
During the event, the Chief Minister revealed that the first installment of ₹1,000 has already been credited to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts. He emphasized the importance of striving towards making Tamil Nadu a $1-trillion economy, aiming for infrastructure that rivals developed nations. Additionally, he urged students to ensure they pursue higher education, stating that it is imperative that no student becomes distracted after completing school.
The Tamil Pudhalvan scheme targets students from government and government-aided schools who are pursuing higher education in Tamil medium. Eligible courses include three-year programs at arts and science colleges, four-year engineering degrees, five-year medical courses, and law degrees, among others.
In his speech, the Chief Minister drew inspiration from the resilience of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, encouraging students to overcome challenges and remain focused on their goals. “Victory will come to those who persist,” he asserted, expressing his confidence in the student body.
Stalin further highlighted various initiatives undertaken by his administration, including the Tamil Pudhalvan and the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, reiterating his government’s commitment to supporting students. He noted the launch of Tamil Pudhalvan was in response to male students feeling neglected when the Pudhumai Penn scheme was introduced. The choice of Coimbatore for the launch reflects the region’s robust educational framework and community spirit.
The Chief Minister also showcased several other welfare schemes, such as the Vidiyal Payanam Thittam providing free bus travel for women, ₹1,000 monthly support for 1.15 crore women through Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai, the Chief Minister’s Free Breakfast Scheme benefiting 20.73 lakh students, and enhanced opportunities under the Naan Mudhalvan program, which has trained 28 lakh students.
The event witnessed participation from various ministers, local officials, and community leaders, all aligned in their support for educational advancement in Tamil Nadu.
