The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted two separate closure reports regarding the high-profile case surrounding the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, nearly five years after his tragic passing. Rajput was discovered hanging at his residence in Mumbai on June 14, 2020.
One report addresses the abetment to suicide case filed by Rajput’s father, while the second pertains to a complaint from his rumored girlfriend against his sisters. The report related to the father was submitted to a special court in Patna, Rajput’s hometown, while the findings from the complaint were presented to a court in Mumbai.
Following initial investigations, the Mumbai Police declared the death a suicide, confirmed by a postmortem report citing asphyxia due to hanging. However, the case incited extensive media coverage and public speculation, leading to a wave of conspiracy theories.
ABETMENT ALLEGATIONS
In his complaint, KK Singh accused Rhea Chakraborty of contributing to his son’s suicide and alleged that she misappropriated Rajput’s funds, claiming she siphoned off Rs 15 crore. Chakraborty has consistently denied these accusations, which also included claims that she poisoned Rajput.
The CBI took over the case from the Bihar Police, examining statements from Chakraborty and others. In the course of the investigation, Chakraborty and several associates were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau during a drug-related inquiry linked to Rajput’s demise. She spent 28 days in custody before being granted bail.
Ultimately, the CBI found insufficient evidence to support the allegations of foul play or that anyone played a role in driving Rajput to suicide. The agency’s findings were corroborated by forensic reports and expert opinions, which ruled out poisoning or strangulation as causes of death.
COUNTER ALLEGATIONS
In retaliation to the accusations against her, Chakraborty filed a counter-FIR against Rajput’s sister and a Delhi-based doctor for allegedly prescribing medication to Rajput without proper consultation. This case was subsequently transferred to the CBI for investigation.
Despite Chakraborty’s claims that Rajput died shortly after taking questioned medication, the CBI found no substantial evidence of wrongdoing concerning the prescription.
The courts will now determine the future of the closure reports and whether further investigations are warranted.
LEGAL REACTIONS
Chakraborty’s legal representation expressed satisfaction with the CBI’s investigation, stating they appreciate the thoroughness with which all angles of the case were explored. The lawyer emphasized the harmful impact of false narratives propagated in social and electronic media during the investigation.
Additionally, it was noted that Chakraborty endured significant hardships, including 27 days in jail prior to her bail.
Meanwhile, political reactions have surfaced in light of the CBI’s findings, with criticisms directed at political parties for exploiting Rajput’s case for political gain. Allegations have been made suggesting that certain political entities sought to manipulate the situation to undermine the previous government.
As this intricate case unfolds, it captures public attention, highlighting the interplay between media, politics, and legal proceedings surrounding celebrity matters in India.
