At least 30 individuals sustained injuries in a tram collision at Strasbourg’s central station on Saturday, according to local authorities. Eyewitness accounts and video evidence captured the chaotic aftermath, showing smoke billowing from the trams while alarm sirens blared.
Reports indicate that the accident occurred when one tram switched tracks and struck a stationary vehicle, with other sources suggesting that one tram was reversing at the time. An investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the incident, and fortunately, there have been no confirmed fatalities.
Strasbourg’s Mayor Jeanne Barseghian addressed the media at the scene, confirming that a collision took place but stating that the cause remains unknown. She urged the public to await the results of the ongoing investigation.
One witness recounted seeing a tram reversing rapidly before the collision, describing a loud impact, while another noted that the impact caused tram doors to fly off. In response to the situation, a large security perimeter was established around the area, allowing emergency services to operate effectively.
The Bas-Rhin region’s Fire and Rescue Service advised the public to avoid the vicinity to ensure unobstructed access for emergency personnel. According to the service’s director, some injuries were related to trauma, including scalp wounds, clavicle fractures, and knee sprains. Additionally, around 100 individuals without serious injuries were evaluated by medical personnel.
Approximately 130 firefighters and 50 emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene. The director of the local public transport authority reported that while the tram drivers were uninjured, they were understandably traumatized by the event.
