Speeding Emerges as Leading Cause of Traffic Accidents

The recent New Year holiday travel period has seen a concerning rise in traffic accidents, with reports indicating 514 incidents resulting in 77 fatalities within just two days. According to the Transport Ministry, speeding violations have been identified as the primary cause of these accidents.
The accidents occurred during the weekend, leading to 525 injuries in addition to the reported deaths. Notably, speed limit violations accounted for 67% of the accidents, with pickup trucks being the most involved vehicles, totaling 276.
The provinces of Ayutthaya, Chon Buri, Pathum Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat each recorded the highest death tolls of three. Meanwhile, Bangkok reported the most accidents, totaling 25 incidents.
In response to the alarming statistics, highway police reported the apprehension of 11,743 motorists for exceeding speed limits during this period, alongside 249 arrests related to drunk driving. Moreover, 3,982 individuals were cited for running red lights, and 44 drivers were stopped for operating vehicles in the wrong direction.
