The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State has expressed serious concerns regarding the ongoing non-payment of salaries for local government workers, which have reportedly not been disbursed since February.
In a press briefing following a meeting of the executive council in Port Harcourt, NLC Chairman Alex Agwanwor issued a stern warning: if salaries for local government workers are not paid by the end of March, along with those for the current month, the NLC will consider withdrawing its members from service.
Agwanwor emphasized the urgent need for the implementation of the minimum wage across local government areas by the end of March, aligning with the national leadership’s position calling for a state of emergency in Rivers State.
He stated, “Salaries of all public workers in Rivers State must be paid on or before the end of March. If by then the salaries of local government workers and the minimum wage are not implemented, we will initiate steps to withdraw our members from services across all local governments and public sectors.”
The NLC leader reiterated that workers should not become collateral damage in the political crises facing the state, highlighting that the financial struggles of local government employees should not continue. “Workers’ salaries, especially at the local government levels, have been overdue since February,” he remarked, stressing the need for prompt action to avoid service withdrawal.
