Search for Cambodian Accomplices Intensifies After Arrest of Suspected Thai Hitman
Authorities are pursuing additional suspects in Cambodia following the arrest of a former Thai marine linked to the murder of a Cambodian opposition figure. Thai police have formally requested the extradition of Ekalak Paenoi, accused of killing ex-MP Lim Kimya, who was gunned down in Bangkok. Investigative chief Pol Maj Gen Theeradet Thumsuthee expressed optimism that Ekalak could be returned to Thailand in less than a month as Cambodian authorities process his illegal entry charges.
The Thai Justice Minister announced that Cambodia has indicated its willingness to extradite Ekalak, aiming to uncover the underlying motives of the murder. Quick actions from Cambodian officials may also address concerns regarding the political implications connected to the crime.
Following the shooting, Ekalak fled Thailand, attempting to evade capture through multiple provinces before crossing into Cambodia. Police had no firearm in his possession at the time of his arrest, and questioning regarding his escape is still pending.
Thai police remain on the lookout for at least two additional Cambodian suspects, including a spotter believed to have facilitated the attack by identifying Lim Kimya just before the shooting. Reports indicate that the spotter exited Thailand shortly after the incident.
Political Climate Heightens Tensions
Lim Kimya was a notable member of the Cambodia National Rescue Party, an opposition group that faced dissolution amid allegations of a fabricated treason plot linked to the ruling Cambodian People’s Party. Bangkok has become a focal point for political dissidents fleeing authoritarian regimes, yet it has also seen incidents of forced deportations which raise serious legal and ethical concerns.
Recent events, particularly Lim Kimya’s assassination, have heightened fears among Cambodian refugees in Thailand, some of whom are already wary of potential political violence and persecution.
