In a significant address during his farewell on January 3, 2025, retiring Supreme Court Justice C.T. Ravikumar emphasized the necessity of constructive criticism and public discourse regarding Supreme Court rulings of considerable public importance. He underscored that the people of India play a crucial role as guardians of the judiciary.
Justice Ravikumar stated that open discussions surrounding Supreme Court judgments are essential for the evolution of law, saying, “I firmly believe that any judgment that holds public importance must invite public discussion and subsequent constructive criticism.”
He advocated for public oversight of the judiciary, stating, “If the judiciary is the guardian of the Constitution, then the public must keep an eye on the judges.” He stressed that it is the collective responsibility of the people of India to act as guardians of the judiciary, which, in turn, must safeguard the people through the Constitution.
Justice Ravikumar, born on January 6, 1960, in Peermadu, Kerala, completed his zoology degree at Bishop Moore College, Mavelikara, and acquired his LLB from Government Law College, Calicut.
