ECNETNews warns users of fraudulent token schemes falsely claiming affiliation with MetaMask, clarifying that there is currently no official MetaMask token.
MetaMask, a leading Web3 wallet provider, issued an alert on March 3 regarding scams promoting non-existent MetaMask tokens. The platform emphatically stated that any claims asserting the existence of a MetaMask token are false and potentially dangerous.
Recent announcements indicate that projects promoting trading or pre-market sales of a MetaMask token are not affiliated with the platform. There is officially no MetaMask token available, and these advertisements are linked to speculative platforms without any legitimate connection.
This warning follows MetaMask’s February 28 announcement of a major update, which will introduce Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL) smart contract capabilities. Scammers may be exploiting this significant development to deceive users.
Previously, MetaMask addressed similar threats, debunking rumors of a MetaMask token airdrop in March 2023. They warned that such claims were not only unfounded but also created opportunities for scammers and phishing attacks.
Surge in Crypto Scams
The rise in scams involving fraudulent tokens sees malicious actors convincing users to invest in counterfeit assets that echo legitimate projects. These schemes lead to significant financial losses for unsuspecting investors.
Prominent figures have also fallen victim to these scams; for instance, reports suggest that a notable entrepreneur lost nearly $870,000 after interacting with a compromised MetaMask wallet. Furthermore, MetaMask users have faced address poisoning attacks, where scammers manipulate transaction histories to deceive users into sending funds to fraudulent addresses.
