Protests are planned across major cities in the U.S. on Presidents Day, as activists mobilize to voice their concerns over recent government actions.
These demonstrations, organized by the 50501 Movement, which stands for “50 states, 50 protests, 1 movement,” aim to challenge what the group describes as “anti-democratic actions” from the Trump administration. This marks the second nationwide protest by this organization, following an initial event on February 5.
The upcoming protests follow a controversial series of executive orders signed by President Trump, which have raised alarms among activists regarding the potential overreach of government influence, particularly amid initiatives spearheaded by private sector figures such as Elon Musk.
Local organizer Sydney Wilson from Pittsburgh emphasized that holding protests on a day dedicated to honoring U.S. presidents is especially poignant. “We are expressing our concerns regarding our current president’s actions,” Wilson stated, highlighting the significance of the timing.
The 50501 Movement first gained traction through discussions on community platforms, with the protest concept rapidly expanding in late January. According to organizers, the preliminary nationwide protest on February 5 saw participation from thousands across various cities, including significant gatherings at state capitols.
During those protests, attendees demanded the impeachment of President Trump, an investigation into Elon Musk’s role in government initiatives, and the reinstatement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs that have been rescinded by recent executive orders.
For the upcoming protests on Monday, organizers anticipate a turnout as large, if not larger, than previous events, maintaining a clear set of demands that include the removal of Musk from his governmental position and stronger anti-discrimination legislation.
The 50501 Movement, which aims to unify activists across various social justice campaigns, including Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ+ rights, operates independently of any political party and characterizes its upcoming protest as a vital call to action.
In a statement, the group addressed their mission: “We refuse to stand idly by as this administration prioritizes profit over people and undermines the dignity of our communities. We reject fascism and the notion that anyone’s worth is less than another’s.”
The 50501 Movement has gained considerable traction online, with over 102,000 members on their community forum and more than 7,000 members participating in discussions on dedicated communication platforms. Support also comes from local and state Democratic lawmakers, who have shown solidarity with the movement, particularly during past protests.
