President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met recently in Washington. Zelenskyy departed from the meeting without reaching a formal agreement.
The U.S. administration has announced a temporary halt on military aid to Ukraine, according to a White House official, following a contentious meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“The President has emphasized his commitment to peace. We require our partners to share this commitment,” the official stated. “Aid is currently paused for review to assess its effectiveness in facilitating a resolution.”
This decision comes just a day before Trump is set to address Congress, amidst ongoing European efforts to build support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
Recent developments highlight a growing tension, particularly following Zelenskyy’s visit to finalize an agreement on essential minerals, which Trump identified as a potential pathway toward a comprehensive peace agreement. However, the meeting escalated into a heated debate over strategies to resolve the conflict with Russia.
Trump criticized Zelenskyy for “risking World War III” and expressed frustration over perceived disrespect towards the U.S.
Ukraine has been urging the U.S. for security assurances to safeguard against further Russian territorial advances, should a ceasefire be established. However, Trump has been hesitant to provide such commitments.
Meanwhile, during a conference in London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated that Zelenskyy agreed to collaborate on a ceasefire plan with the U.K. and France. European leaders, aside from Hungary, have predominantly rallied in support of Zelenskyy following the recent discussions with Trump.
