Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, leader of the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), is set to lead his party’s MPs in a no-confidence debate against Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on March 24, according to party secretary-general Paiboon Nititawan.
The PPRP has been allocated a two-hour timeframe to critique the prime minister, with Gen Prawit actively participating in the session.
Major topics of discussion will include the government’s management of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s detention in a premium ward of the Police General Hospital and the contentious 2001 memorandum on maritime claims in the Gulf of Thailand. Furthermore, the Alpine land dispute and plans for a government-backed casino-entertainment complex will also be addressed.
Paiboon expressed confidence that the censure debate will effectively challenge the prime minister’s position.
The motion, submitted last week, specifically targets Ms. Paetongtarn, alleging a lack of leadership and undue influence from her father, Thaksin.
In response, the prime minister has stated her readiness to answer scrutiny during the debate, emphasizing her intent to present factual data to refute opposition claims. At 38, she aims to clarify her role as “the country’s first Generation-Y prime minister” to the public.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party (BJT), affirmed his party’s commitment to supporting the prime minister amid the looming no-confidence debate.
“The prime minister has acted within the law and demonstrates a clear intention to tackle the country’s challenges,” Anutin remarked, indicating that BJT ministers are prepared to provide necessary information should the debate involve their party or affiliated agencies.
