Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced that her first policy statement next week will largely reflect the initiatives of her predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, with some modifications to the digital wallet distribution program.
During a working session at the Shinawatra Tower 3, the temporary headquarters of the Pheu Thai Party, Ms. Paetongtarn reaffirmed that the majority of the policy statement will align with previous government strategies. Her father, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, was seen entering the building, choosing not to engage with media representatives.
“Most existing policies will be emphasized, but there will be slight adjustments, particularly related to the digital wallet initiative,” Ms. Paetongtarn stated, highlighting the stimulus scheme endorsed by Mr. Srettha.
In a recent statement, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat acknowledged the need for modifications to the handout program, suggesting a shift towards cash distribution for certain recipients.
Additionally, Ms. Paetongtarn indicated her commitment to advancing the investment policies initiated by her predecessor.
“While there has been a change in leadership, the Pheu Thai Party remains the central force within the coalition government,” she emphasized.
She also expressed her intention to uphold the international trade policies established under Mr. Srettha’s administration.
Ms. Paetongtarn plans to incorporate suggestions from other coalition parties into the draft policy statement, which she aims to finalize soon.
In response to critiques regarding the new cabinet, which includes several family members of veteran politicians, she viewed these appointments positively, anticipating enhanced support for her ministers’ efforts.
At 38, Ms. Paetongtarn urged critics to consider her position as the country’s youngest prime minister and to allow her the opportunity to prove her capabilities.
The public will witness Ms. Paetongtarn’s inaugural presentation in parliament during her policy statement, scheduled for discussion on Thursday and Friday of next week, according to government officials.
