The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has unveiled plans to construct six multi-purpose emergency shelters across Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers states to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in anticipation of potential flooding in the Niger Delta region.
During a press conference at the NDDC headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Managing Director emphasized the initiative as a vital proactive measure aimed at mitigating the impact of recurrent floods. The shelters will be equipped with essential facilities such as a school, clinic, cafeteria, police post, and recreation center, providing comprehensive support for communities during crises.
Currently, six emergency shelters are under development in Otuokpoti and Odi in Bayelsa State, with additional facilities planned for Patani and Ozorro in Delta State, and two others in Rivers State.
The NDDC continues to enhance community safety by deploying solar-powered street lights throughout the nine states of the Niger Delta, a strategic move against criminality while promoting peace in the region. The success of the “Light Up the Niger Delta” campaign has reportedly led to a decrease in crime and a boost in local commerce.
On the youth empowerment front, the NDDC will launch the Holistic Opportunities Programme of Engagement (HOPE) later this month in Port Harcourt. This initiative, alongside the NDDC Youth Internship Scheme, aims to foster entrepreneurship and skill development, enabling young people to acquire valuable, self-sustaining skills for a better future.
In support of agricultural development, the NDDC collaborates with the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce to aid farmers and recognized entrepreneurs. The organization acknowledges technology as pivotal for the region’s future, committing to train youth and equip them with necessary resources.
As part of its educational initiatives, the NDDC has secured 45,000 U-Lesson tablets for distribution to schools, aimed at enhancing learning opportunities for students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
The NDDC highlighted recent accomplishments, including the completion of notable infrastructure projects such as the 25.7-kilometer Ogbia-Nembe road in partnership with Shell Petroleum Development Company and the inauguration of a 132KV Transmission Line and substation in Ondo State, which benefits over 2,000 communities. Additionally, key projects in Akwa Ibom and Abia states are set to strengthen vital transportation links across the region.
