The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has voiced significant concerns regarding the surge in criminal activities, especially kidnappings, throughout the nation.
In a statement shared on social media, Obi highlighted that the alarming rise in kidnappings and murders has affected every Nigerian, with detrimental effects on vital sectors such as agriculture, education, and healthcare. He stated, “The frequent occurrence of crimes, particularly kidnapping, is troubling and instills a sense of unease across the country.”
Obi emphasized that no one is immune to the pervasive threat of kidnappings and killings, which have become a national crisis. “Every Nigerian is feeling the heat of insecurity, impacting all facets of our society, from the agricultural sector, where farmers are often forced off their lands, to the health and education sectors, where essential personnel face the risks of abduction or death.”
He highlighted recent tragic incidents, such as the murder of the Manager of the College of Nursing Sciences in Ihiala and the kidnapping of two Reverend Sisters—one a principal and the other a teacher—who serve in various schools in Anambra State. “These individuals are vital contributors to our national progress, making sacrifices in agriculture, education, and healthcare in remote areas.”
Obi condemned the justifications surrounding these heinous acts, stating, “Nothing can justify the kidnappings and killings of innocent Nigerians.” He called for immediate action from leaders, expressing concern about the potentially unreported incidents of violence.
He urged the government to utilize all available security resources to combat this threat and ensure the safe return of those held captive. Additionally, he appealed to the criminals to reconsider their actions and cease their violent behavior. “We must work together to protect our nation from the grips of terror and violence.”
