ECNETNews reports that Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, leader of the Palang Pracharath Party, is set to spearhead a no-confidence debate against Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on March 24. Party secretary-general Paiboon Nititawan confirmed this development on Tuesday.
The PPRP has been allotted two hours to question the prime minister, with Gen Prawit actively participating in the discourse.
The debate will focus on critical issues including the government’s management of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s previous medical detention and disputes surrounding the 2001 memorandum of understanding related to maritime claims in the Gulf of Thailand.
Additionally, the Alpine land dispute and the government’s proposed casino-entertainment complex will also be on the agenda.
Paiboon expressed confidence that the censure debate would significantly challenge the prime minister’s position, stating, “We are certain this will rattle her.” The no-confidence motion, filed last week, specifically targets Ms Paetongtarn, questioning her leadership capabilities and alleging that she is influenced by her father, Thaksin.
The prime minister has previously stated her readiness to address all inquiries during the debate, promising to provide factual information to counter any allegations made by the opposition.
At just 38 years old, Ms Paetongtarn described the no-confidence debate as an opportunity to connect with the public and showcase her leadership as the nation’s first Generation-Y prime minister.
Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, affirmed his party’s support for the prime minister, stating that she has adhered to legal responsibilities and is committed to resolving national issues. He also indicated that ministers from his party would provide relevant information if any agency under the Interior Ministry is implicated during the debate.
