The Oyo State Government is poised to partner with the Kingdom of the Netherlands to revolutionize waste management and foster a circular economy aimed at sustainable environmental practices.
During a pivotal meeting between the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and Dutch government representatives, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, revealed plans for this collaboration.
In a statement from the Ministry of Information and Orientation, it was highlighted that this meeting took place on Wednesday at the Ministry of Environment in Ibadan, the state capital.
Mogbonjubola emphasized the need for a comprehensive roadmap to effectively implement the concept of a circular economy, stating, “This marks the beginning of a new relationship, and we will conduct all necessary follow-ups.”
To spearhead this initiative, the commissioner announced the establishment of a Circular Economy Desk within the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. This committee will harness expertise from existing institutions and formulate effective strategies for implementation.
“I am thrilled that this is occurring during my tenure. While we have a platform, we have yet to fully capitalize on it. Now, Oyo State is ready to take decisive action,” he added.
The Representative of the Consulate General of the Netherlands, Peter Kelley, underscored the economic possibilities inherent in waste recycling. He stated, “What works in the Netherlands can be successfully implemented here if we engage all stakeholders—government, businesses, communities, and universities. Our role is to facilitate this process.”
Additionally, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Sunday Ojelabi, expressed appreciation for the Netherlands’ commitment to supporting Oyo State’s sustainability objectives.
