Deadly Attacks Spark Outrage Across Ondo, Benue, and Nasarawa States
Residents in Ondo, Benue, Nasarawa, and Edo states are grappling with a wave of violent attacks attributed to suspected armed herders, leading to significant public unrest and protests. Reports indicate that 30 individuals have lost their lives in various incidents across these states, with community leaders urgently calling for government intervention.
In Ondo State, nine surveyors were reportedly kidnapped, while additional residents sustained injuries from gun and machete attacks in Edo. On Monday, a group of angry protesters, primarily women, took to the streets of Akure to voice their frustration over the kidnappings and recent killings in Akure North Local Government Area.
Eyewitness accounts describe armed assailants launching attacks on the communities of Aba Alajido, Aba Sunday, Aba Pastor, and Ademekun, leaving behind destruction and death. Authorities have confirmed the recovery of at least 14 bodies and continue to seek more victims.
In Benue State, protests erupted in Naka after three members of the state’s Civil Protection Guards were ambushed and killed. The discovery of their bodies led to violent unrest, resulting in the burning of the traditional ruler’s palace and parts of the local government secretariat. Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the violence and called for accountability from security forces.
Meanwhile, in Nasarawa State, a communal clash in the Farin Dutse community spiraled into a more extensive crisis, leading to the death of at least seven individuals, including a pregnant woman.
