A prominent lawmaker from Osun State, representing the Obokun/Oriade federal constituency in the House of Representatives, has publicly apologized to former governor Gboyega Oyetola. This comes in response to a petition submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by a local constituent.
In a recent Facebook post, the lawmaker criticized the petition filed by the Osun State Government, which seeks to investigate Oyetola—now serving as the Minister of Blue Economy—for alleged misappropriation of a $20 million World Bank health grant.
The representative, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), called on the EFCC to dismiss the petition initiated by a local government lawyer. He stated, “I extend my apologies to Gboyega Oyetola regarding the petition sent to the EFCC by one of my supposed constituents.”
He further emphasized that while it is not unusual for lawyers to undertake legal briefs on behalf of any individual or government, it is unacceptable to pursue actions solely intended to damage someone’s reputation and that of their family.
He highlighted the existence of the Osun State House of Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee and the independent Office of the Auditor General of Osun State, which is constitutionally mandated to oversee government expenditures and provide annual reports to the Assembly.
The lawmaker insisted, “If the Auditor General has fulfilled their role and reported to the Parliament, then it is the responsibility of the Parliament to act. Should anyone be indicted in this report, only then can prosecution be considered.”
He concluded by raising concerns about fostering trust between the Federal Government and the state, particularly as collaboration for the years 2026 and 2027 approaches.
