Natasha Jonas is eagerly anticipating her next world title defense after a thrilling victory over Mikaela Mayer in January for the IBF welterweight championship. Jonas, hailing from Liverpool, expressed interest in a rematch with Mayer; however, negotiations have not progressed. “It’s not us holding it up,” Jonas stated. “I said yes immediately and have been in discussions with her team to make it happen.”
Jonas aims to prove her dominance with a decisive win in any potential rematch. “I believe I can beat her more convincingly the second time,” she declared.
In the meantime, Mayer is set to face Sandy Ryan for the WBO welterweight title on September 28 in New York, adding another layer of excitement to the division.
The rivalry isn’t just limited to Mayer; multi-weight champion Claressa Shields has also engaged in social media banter directed at Jonas. “She finds offense in everything,” Jonas remarked humorously. “She needs to take a day off.” Jonas believes Shields is trying to provoke fights due to limited competition in her division. “At lighter weights, there’s much more competition,” Jonas noted.
Past negotiations for a fight between Jonas and Shields have faltered primarily due to disagreements on weight. Jonas explained, “There was no confidence from her team about making the 154-pound limit, which ultimately halted the negotiations.”
At 40 years old, Jonas is aware that her boxing career may not have many years left. She emphasized her desire to engage in high-profile bouts, stating, “I want to be in big fights and have memorable nights.” With potential upcoming contests on the horizon, fans are anticipated to see Jonas in action again soon.
In other boxing news, Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight clash against Daniel Dubois is scheduled for Saturday, September 21.
