The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is advancing its internal election process as it seeks to appoint a new national president. Incumbent chief J.P. Nadda has designated MP K. Laxman as the national returning officer, with MPs Naresh Bansal, Sambit Patra, and national vice-president Rekha Verma serving as co-officers for the upcoming polls.
While Mr. Nadda’s official tenure has concluded, he will remain in his role until his successor is chosen.
The election process commenced with the launch of a membership drive, aimed at renewing and acquiring memberships through various channels. Party members were encouraged to participate by making missed calls to designated numbers or enrolling through local leaders.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the initiative to kick off the drive on September 3 by being the first to renew his membership via a missed call. This membership campaign was conducted in two phases—from September 2 to 5 and October 1 to 15.
After the completion of the membership drive, elections will proceed at the block, district, and state levels, culminating in the election of the national president by the end of the year.
Historically, the BJP has not faced significant opposition for its presidential candidates, who are typically chosen through internal consultations with the party leadership and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It is anticipated that a consensus candidate will emerge, receiving support from various state units.
