The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has expressed that his previous criticisms of political leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, stemmed from a genuine desire for progress in Nigeria.
During a recent event marking the inauguration of a solar-powered community ICT center in Abeokuta, the minister praised Tinubu as a courageous leader capable of addressing the country’s complex challenges.
He emphasized his commitment to serving under Tinubu, stating that it was driven by trust in the President’s leadership capabilities. “Leadership is about intentions,” he remarked, highlighting Nigeria’s fortunate position to have Tinubu at the helm.
The minister noted that Tinubu’s administration has made significant strides, particularly through the introduction of a student loan scheme that increases educational access for all young Nigerians, regardless of their socioeconomic status. He also pointed out the recent removal of the fuel subsidy, which has paved the way for the reallocation of resources towards national development.
Furthermore, he mentioned that Tinubu has effectively reduced the country’s debt servicing obligations, allowing for increased funding for essential projects. “It was not difficult for me to work with a leader focused on societal improvement,” he added.
These comments followed a remark by the Senate President, who noted that Tijani’s nomination had initially faced opposition due to his past criticisms. He had previously made controversial comments about lawmakers, sparking debate during his Senate screening.
Acknowledging the concerns, the Senate President justified the confirmation of Tijani’s appointment, reaffirming trust in Tinubu’s judgment.
Tinubu also shared that his decision to appoint Tijani was met with skepticism by some close associates who highlighted the minister’s previous social media criticisms. Nevertheless, he stood firm in recognizing Tijani’s potential and contributions, suggesting that past frustrations could lead to a stronger commitment to governance.
“As a leader, I appreciate those who have the courage to voice their opinions,” Tinubu remarked, expressing pride in Tijani’s current contributions to the government.
