WhatsApp and Messenger are set to receive significant enhancements in Europe.
Emerging concerns over user privacy highlight the need for stronger safeguards in digital communications.
In accordance with Europe’s Digital Markets Act, the company is enabling WhatsApp and Messenger users to engage with others using third-party messaging services, a feature termed ‘third-party chats.’
In a recent statement, the company revealed that it has been actively gathering user feedback to prioritize the development of third-party chat functionalities.

“We have incorporated new notifications in WhatsApp and Messenger that keep users informed about the availability of third-party chats,” the statement reads. “Users will be notified each time a new third-party messaging application is available. We’ve also crafted an intuitive onboarding process that allows users to learn more about third-party chats and customize their settings. This includes selecting preferred third-party apps for messaging and managing their inboxes,” the company added.
According to the announcement, users will have the option to direct third-party messages to a separate folder or integrate them into their existing inbox. Features include reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Additionally, functionalities such as group creation, voice calls, and video calls are expected to roll out by 2027.
“As we previously highlighted, creating third-party chats poses technical challenges while maintaining user privacy and security remains a collective responsibility,” the company stated. “While we have made notable progress, there is still much more to accomplish.”
