Explosion in Manhole at Texas Tech University Triggers Evacuations and Class Cancellations
LUBBOCK, Texas — An explosion in a manhole on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock has caused fires and power outages, prompting officials to issue evacuation orders for several buildings and to cancel classes for the remainder of the week.
Alert notifications sent to the campus community identified the explosion as originating from a substation; however, subsequent communications clarified it occurred at a manhole. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, according to local fire officials.
Footage shared across different platforms shows a significant response from firefighters, with fire and smoke emerging from at least one manhole cover on campus.
The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
Officials announced that power will be cut to the entire campus while repairs are being conducted. “You can go ahead and go home for Spring break. We are closing school down for the next couple of days,” a university spokesperson confirmed.
Faculty and staff have been advised to work remotely where possible until further updates are provided.
Lubbock Fire Rescue had responded to reports of a potential gas leak earlier in the evening, discovering multiple manhole covers emitting smoke and flames. “This remains a very active scene as crews continue to assist Texas Tech University in mitigating this emergency,” they stated.
Texas Tech University serves over 40,000 students and spans 1,800 acres in West Texas.
