In a shocking incident, the Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended 26-year-old Nura Mas’ud from Mu’azu village in Sule Tankarkar LGA for allegedly setting his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire.
Reports indicate that Mrs. Muhammad had been increasingly worried about her grandson’s mental health and physical condition, prompting her frequent inquiries.
Sources reveal that Mas’ud became agitated by these inquiries and had issued warnings to his grandmother to cease her questioning, which she reportedly ignored.
In a disturbing confession, Mas’ud admitted that he was overwhelmed by his grandmother’s persistent questions regarding his health. He claimed that his drastic action of dousing her with petrol was an attempt to silence her.
“She frequently asked about my health, and I tried to understand what was wrong with me, but she remained silent. That led me to pour petrol on her,” Mas’ud stated.
The spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, Shiisu Lawan Adam, confirmed the tragic events, stating that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect is suffering from severe mental health issues and has been under care at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect is mentally unstable and has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital,” Lawan reported.
According to him, Mas’ud attacked his grandmother with petrol before igniting the flames, leading to her hospitalization, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries. The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime, attributing it to the relentless inquiries made by the victim.
