Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Kansas Priest
SENECA, Kansas — A Catholic priest was shot and killed on Thursday at his parish rectory in Seneca, Kansas, according to church officials.
The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Father Arul Carasala, who was fatally shot earlier in the day. The archdiocese described this act of violence as senseless and acknowledged the grief felt throughout the community for a beloved priest and leader.
Father Carasala had served as the pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca since 2011. Originally from India, he was ordained in 1994 and began his ministry in Kansas in 2004, later becoming a U.S. citizen in 2011.
Reports indicated that Father Carasala was shot at the church rectory and succumbed to his injuries shortly after at a local hospital. A suspected shooter is reportedly in custody.
Kris Anderson, the parish’s director of religious education, shared that an older man approached Father Carasala and opened fire, hitting him three times. However, details surrounding the shooting remain limited.
Local law enforcement officials have not provided further information, deferring inquiries to the County Attorney, who was unavailable for comment.
The archbishop reassured the community that there was no ongoing threat, while acknowledging the pain and shock caused by the priest’s tragic death. Seneca, with a population of approximately 2,100, is situated about 60 miles north of Topeka.
Father Carasala was known for his dedication and passion for his ministry, having served the Archdiocese for over two decades and also held the position of dean for the Nemaha-Marshall region. His commitment to his parishioners and the church will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
