The City of Long Beach is currently inviting applications for its Visual Improvement Program (VIP) Grant, designed to provide financial aid of up to $1,500 to small businesses and nonprofits impacted by crime or vandalism occurring on or after October 1, 2022. This initiative aims to assist with the costs associated with storefront repairs, boarding, insurance deductibles, and operating expenses.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until funding is exhausted, with awards issued as funds become available. Applicants will be contacted if additional information is required during the review process.
The City has committed that at least 50% of grant funding will be allocated to businesses owned by individuals of color or those located in low- to moderate-income neighborhoods. Efforts are being made to reach these areas to ensure fair access to funding and align with the Long Beach Recovery Act.
Eligible businesses may submit one application per unique incident of vandalism and can receive up to $1,500 for each occurrence. However, businesses can only receive one award every six months.
To qualify, businesses must operate within Long Beach city limits and possess a valid business license from the City. Eligible entities include private for-profit businesses or 501(c)(3) nonprofits that are currently operational or temporarily closed due to property damage. Applicants must also supply proof of vandalism and other necessary documentation, including a photo ID, W-9, and business license.
Additional eligibility criteria include:
– Independently owned, not publicly traded
– Fewer than 200 employees
– Annual gross revenue under $2 million
– Active status with the California Secretary of State (with the exception of sole proprietors)
– A physical storefront in Long Beach
– Valid EIN, FEIN, or SSN
Home-based businesses, permanently closed entities, and those that have received similar funding for the same incident are not eligible. Other excluded applicants include government entities, landlords, financial institutions, and businesses involved in illegal or predatory activities.
This grant is part of Long Beach’s comprehensive strategy to support the recovery and revitalization of small businesses affected by property crime.
