Former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, a prominent Wyoming Republican, made headlines with her announcement that she will be casting her vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election. Cheney, known for her staunch criticism of former President Donald Trump, emphasized the urgency of her decision during an event at Duke University, stating, “I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states. And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
Cheney’s statements, which were shared widely on social media, align with the Harris campaign’s ongoing efforts to attract disillusioned Republican voters. Notably, the campaign initiated “Republicans for Harris” last month and featured several Republicans at the recent Democratic National Convention.
Having served in Congress since 2016, Cheney was a Trump supporter in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. However, her stance shifted dramatically following the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, where she emerged as a leading critic of Trump. Cheney was one of the ten Republicans who voted to impeach Trump in 2021 and served on the House committee investigating the events of that day, labeling Trump’s actions as the “greatest betrayal” by a U.S. president.
Her outspoken opposition to Trump led to her removal from a leadership role within the GOP, and in 2022, she was defeated in her primary election by a Trump-backed contender. Cheney’s support for Harris marks a significant moment, highlighting the growing rift within the Republican Party as she joins other notable Republicans who have publicly endorsed Harris.
