Jamshid bin Abdullah, the last Sultan of Zanzibar prior to the January 1964 Revolution, has died in Oman at the age of 95. He passed away on the evening of Monday, December 30, 2024, following a prolonged illness. His burial is anticipated to take place today at the Royal Cemetery in Muscat, Oman.
Born in Zanzibar on September 16, 1929, Jamshid received his initial education in the islands before pursuing further studies in Egypt and the United Kingdom, where he served for two years in the British Royal Navy.
He became Sultan on July 1, 1963, succeeding his father, Sultan Abdullah bin Khalifa. However, his rule lasted just six months as the Revolution on January 12, 1964, ended the monarchy in Zanzibar, leading to Abeid Amani Karume’s election as the first President of Zanzibar.
