The Lagos State Government has committed to holding all parties accountable for the “tragic and shocking death” of a pregnant woman, Mrs. Folajimi, who was denied emergency care by a private hospital in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
The private healthcare facility refused to provide assistance due to a lack of financial deposit, jeopardizing the lives of both Mrs. Folajimi and her unborn child.
In response to this alarming incident, the state’s Commissioner for Health has launched an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), has established a panel to investigate potential breaches in medical standards and assess the level of negligence involved.
Initial reports suggest that both a traditional birth attendant and the private hospital played roles in this tragic event, and interviews with key individuals are currently being conducted.
The investigation will examine whether the medical facility and the birth attendant were properly registered with HEFAMAA, adhered to approved medical practices, and followed emergency protocols. The government has vowed to take prompt action against any individuals or institutions found to be responsible for this incident.
The Commissioner emphasized the necessity for all healthcare facilities, both public and private, to comply with HEFAMAA regulations, including routine inspections and accreditation.
The government urges the public to report any healthcare facilities that are not properly registered or are operating beyond their capacity. “We are intensifying oversight to ensure healthcare establishments maintain the highest standards of care,” the Commissioner stated.
He also called on community leaders, religious organizations, and healthcare professionals to work together to promote better maternal and child health, aiming to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“We are dedicated to seeking justice for Mrs. Folajimi and her family,” he affirmed.
