He acknowledged Mayo’s respect earned during his playing career and his leadership qualities both on and off the field.
Mayo, who previously played for the Patriots and won a Super Bowl in 2014, rejoined the organization in 2019 as the inside linebackers coach. His reputation as a strong defensive strategist positioned him as a potential successor to legendary coach Bill Belichick when the time came. Unfortunately, after a tumultuous season, that opportunity has come sooner than expected amid an overall decline in team performance.
At 37 years old, Mayo began the season as one of the youngest head coaches in the league. Kraft noted, “I will always be rooting for his success” and emphasized the hope that Mayo’s coaching experiences will contribute to his future achievements.
Despite the struggles this season, rookie quarterback Drake Maye’s promising performances may give the Patriots a chance to focus on strengthening their roster in the upcoming NFL Draft.
