Hollywood couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are heading for divorce after two years of marriage. Lopez officially filed for divorce on Tuesday at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to court documents.
The duo, popularly referred to as Bennifer, tied the knot in Las Vegas in July 2022, followed by a grand wedding celebration in Georgia the following month. Their relationship originally began while filming the 2003 crime comedy Gigli. Although they planned to marry in 2003, the couple split early in 2004.
Nearly two decades later, the two rekindled their romance. Lopez famously noted, “Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient,” during the announcement of their Las Vegas wedding.
In the divorce filing, Lopez or her attorney is required to inform Affleck with a copy of the petition to dissolve their marriage. Reports indicate that Lopez, who had taken on Affleck’s last name, did not provide any details regarding a prenuptial agreement in her filing.
Court documents reveal that both Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, must exchange financial disclosures, detailing their income, expenses, properties, and debts. They are required to notify each other of any changes in their financial situation until a final agreement on financial matters is reached.
Lopez has been given a period of 60 days to file her financial disclosure, after which Affleck will have an additional 60 days to do the same. The documents state that failure to report or update financial information could result in court sanctions.
Speculation has surrounded their relationship in recent months. Reports indicate that they have listed their Beverly Hills mansion for sale at $65 million and were recently seen apart without their wedding rings.
Affleck, a two-time Oscar winner, was previously married to actress Jennifer Garner, whom he met while filming the 2001 romance Pearl Harbor. The couple divorced in 2015, sharing three children. Lopez has been married four times, including to Cuban-born Ojani Noa, former dancer Cris Judd, and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins. She was also engaged to New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.
