The 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) commenced on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The high-level General Debate is set to begin on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, and will run through Saturday, September 28, concluding on Monday, September 30, 2024. This year’s theme, “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations,” emphasizes collective action for global progress.
Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh will participate in the UNGA 79 from September 21-26, 2024, where he is expected to deliver a speech addressing Mongolia’s stance on crucial issues in international relations, alongside the government’s foreign policy objectives and initiatives.
During UNGA 79, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and President Khurelsukh are set to discuss plans for the early ratification of a bilateral defense cooperation agreement. Their discussions in New York highlighted the importance of fortifying a free and open international order rooted in the rule of law, particularly as global conflicts and divisions escalate. The two leaders expressed commitment to enhancing their nations’ cooperation as “special strategic partners,” noting the progress made in principle on a pact regarding the transfer of defense equipment and technology, with plans to finalize this agreement soon.
Concerning North Korea, both leaders reiterated their commitment to urging compliance with UN Security Council resolutions. Prime Minister Kishida acknowledged Mongolia’s understanding and support regarding the sensitive matter of North Korean abductions of Japanese citizens.
The 79th session of the UN General Assembly sees participation from heads of state and government representatives from approximately 140 countries. President Khurelsukh has been an active participant in the UN General Assembly since 2021.
