Jacob Bridgeman Takes Lead at 3M Open After Horschel Withdrawal
Jacob Bridgeman has surged ahead in the first round of the 3M Open, finishing with an impressive eight-under 63 and gaining a one-shot lead. This comes after Open Championship runner-up Billy Horschel withdrew from the tournament due to illness.
Bridgeman, who experienced a tough stretch with three consecutive missed cuts on the PGA Tour, showcased his skills in Minnesota by scoring nine birdies against a single bogey. His stellar performance included a remarkable chip-in from the bunker on his 17th hole.
The 24-year-old golfer’s best finish this season has been tied for 14th place at the RBC Canadian Open in June. He leads the pack with Mackenzie Hughes right behind him, while Patrick Rodgers, Andrew Novak, and Martin Trainer trail by one stroke at six under at TPC Twin Cities.
Sahith Theegala, the highest-ranked player in the tournament at World No. 11, is positioned at five under following a flawless round without any bogeys.
Horschel, currently ranked 33rd in the world, shared that he felt unwell leading up to the tournament, stating, “I wasn’t feeling great late last night and took some medicine.” He expressed disappointment at having to withdraw, emphasizing his eagerness to compete after a strong performance the previous week.
Bridgeman’s exceptional play and the unexpected withdrawal of Horschel have generated buzz around this year’s 3M Open. Fans can catch the second round of the PGA Tour’s 3M Open live from 7 PM on Friday.
