OpenDroids, an emerging robotics startup based in San Francisco, is making waves with its latest home assistant model. Co-founder Jack Jay introduced the R2D3 to an enthusiastic audience, calling it a “Roomba on crack,” highlighting its superior features compared to the first-generation model, R1D1. The R2D3 is designed to perform a variety of tasks, including laundry folding and dishwashing, paving the way for a future where household cleaning could be a distant memory.
The R2D3, along with the R1D1, embodies a vision of simplified everyday living, utilizing self-charging, real-time depth perception, and agile movements to redefine chore assistance. Currently, the R2D3 is being tested in rehabilitation centers, where it aids staff with repetitive tasks. OpenDroids is also targeting restaurant kitchens as a potential market, looking to automate tedious back-of-house operations.
However, prospective buyers should be prepared for a substantial investment. OpenDroids anticipates that the R2D3 will be priced around $60,000. For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, the original R1D1 model is available at a comparatively lower price of $18,500.
While neither model is on the market yet, interested consumers can sign up for a waitlist to express their interest in acquiring one of these advanced robots.
