MINNEAPOLIS — A graduate student from a Minnesota university has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with federal authorities confirming the arrest resulted from a driving under the influence (DUI) offense rather than participation in student protests.
“This is not related to student protests,” a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security stated. “The individual was apprehended following a visa revocation linked to prior DUI charges.”
The incident has raised concerns and sparked protests among students, as university and political leaders demand clarity on the situation. The governor has reached out to federal officials for more information about the circumstances surrounding the student’s detention.
Additionally, officials at another Minnesota university reported that one of their students was also taken into ICE custody on the same day.
University leadership expressed their worries in a letter to the campus community, noting that no official reason had been provided by ICE following the arrest.
Critics are voicing serious concerns regarding the increasing number of ICE detentions of students, often without clear explanations. A U.S. senator has emphasized the need for transparency and accountability from federal immigration authorities in response to these arrests.
The detained graduate student was enrolled in the business program and had been apprehended at an off-campus location. The university is committed to supporting the student while respecting their privacy.
Recent actions imply a troubling trend, with numerous individuals associated with universities facing detainment or deportation, particularly those who have expressed support for political causes. The administration’s interpretation of visa revocation guidelines has raised broader questions about the rights and due process for students.
